I have been working in Legal Costs for 16 years dealing with Publicly Funded and Inter- Partes matters.
I began my career in costs in 2004, taking up a position in the in-house costs department with one of the largest firms of Solicitors in North Wales. I gained experience in a variety of work, particularly public law children proceedings, personal injury, Court of Protection, mental health and Magistrates and Crown Court criminal matters. I subsequently spent 2 years in Chester as a Costs Consultant, before qualifying as a Costs Lawyer in 2011. I then returned to North Wales as the in-house Costs Manager at the firm where I started my career. The role gave me the opportunity to focus on higher value cases and I gained experience in Costs Budgeting and High Costs Case Planning, as well as training junior members of staff and liaising with the Legal Aid Agency during audits. In 2020 I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to join Costs Law Services as a Consultant Costs Lawyer.
My experience working as both an in house costs draftsman and as an external consultant has given me an invaluable insight into the commercial realities of the legal services industry, and the importance of high quality costs drafting in maintaining the profitability of Solicitors’ practices in an increasingly competitive market.
