Assistant Manager

Shamas Alexanderis a Cost Lawyers/Cost Draftsmen at Cost Law Services working in Manchester office

I am a Law Costs Draftsman and Supervisor at the Manchester city centre office. I have experience in dealing with a variety of matters including personal injury, clinical negligence, housing, and industrial disease (employers’ liability). I have over 10 years’ experience working in the client service industry. I have honed the relevant skills and qualities to ensure I deliver exemplary client care, whilst safeguarding their position and achieving their objectives.

I studied an Access course in Law and Criminology and achieved a Distinction in all 15 modules, equivalent to ‘AAA’ at A-Level. This facilitated my placement on an undergraduate course at the University of Manchester where I studied Philosophy and Politics and secured a 2:1. I have recently completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) at BPP University and preparing to commence the LPC. I secured scholarships from BPP University involving a competitive application process.

I have worked for companies such as British Gas, Shoosmiths, Shelter Legal Services and Stephensons Solicitors. I have also been self-employed and appreciate the importance of managing a commercially viable organisation. My business acumen places me in good stead to identify opportunities that maximise on efficiencies and ultimately increase profitability.

I was introduced to legal costs whilst at university. I completed over 500 hours volunteering for Shelter Legal Services and was heavily involved with the Costs Department. Following the volunteer work, I secured permanent employment with the Costs Department and became familiar with all elements of legal costs. I deal with costs cases from drafting, through to negotiation and settlement.

At Cost Law Services I have the opportunity to really exercise my legal costs knowledge. Having been exposed to Inter Partes work with a strong Legal Aid element, this has given me a detailed understanding of what the LAA look for in cases and how they carry out their assessments. I have particular expertise in negotiation. I would assess any given case globally and work out the best possible result that could be achieved. Furthermore, my research and logical reasoning skills have proven useful during litigious conversations with opponents. As a result, I continue to secure the best cost result for my clients!

Notable Cases

Civil Court
I have been involved with a variety of cases involving local authorities, private individuals and national/international employers. A recent case of interest involved a passenger who was on board a flight over the Atlantic Ocean. During the flight the refreshments trolley had struck his knee with some force, causing him personal injury. The passenger was successful in his action against the multimillion-pound airline. I prepared the bill of costs, negotiated with the airline’s legal representatives and secured an 85% costs recovery on the matter.

I enjoy spending time with family and friends and going to the gym. I have a keen interest in personal development/mindfulness and help prepare training material for companies in a variety of sectors.
